Held on the front line between terrorists and government troops. More often closer to death than to life.

I’ve interviewed Marc, now a family man, several times, and his story has become a fixture in one of my leadership programs. People hang on his every word long before they know where it’s going. Marc is a master at putting the elephant in the room. Not the awkward topic nobody wants to touch, but a quiet hint that plants a question only the story can answer.

It all starts innocently enough. A diving trip with his parents on a small island in Malaysia. We picture Marc snorkeling in crystal clear water, sunlight glittering on the surface, bright fish drifting around him. Everything is calm. Paradise, pretty much. And yet something hangs in the air. You can almost hear it crackle.

His interview is really about resilience and how people handle extreme situations. But it’s worth taking a closer look at how he tells it. Because even the most gripping story can taste like hospital food. And in business, bland is on the menu far too often.

Here are three ways Marc hangs the elephant in the room:

The Breadcrumb (a hint)
A line that points to what’s coming without giving it away.
“That was the last day the ocean was simply beautiful to me.”

The Crystal Ball (a false prediction)
A forecast the audience senses won’t come true.
“After the dive, my dad said: It doesn’t get any better than this.”

The Detail That Doesn’t Fit (a setup)
A small element that feels a little off and comes back later.
“There was a boat on the horizon. It wasn’t a dive boat. I didn’t think anything of it.”

Marc could open with a classic announcement: “Today I’m going to talk about resilience.” Audience on the edge of their seats? Not exactly. The middle ground is a spoiler with a bit of elephant in it: “I was held hostage for 140 days. And it all started with the best vacation of my life.” Getting warmer. And then there’s the pure elephant: “The night before we left, we decided to go diving one last time.”

Leadership works the same way. “Let me give you a quick project update” is an announcement. “We’re right on schedule. That’s what worries me.” Now people are listening.

Not sure which one you’ve got? Run the elephant test. Does the line raise a question only the story can answer? That’s an elephant. Does it sum things up or give away the moral? That’s an announcement.

One more thing: Marc’s quotes come from my memory. I wouldn’t swear to every word under oath, but I’d stand by the gist in any court.

Warm regards, Ralph

Marc spent more than 100 days in the hands of kidnappers.
