Not every one heads south. And people leave jobs for reasons that have nothing to do with the person above them. A real opportunity opens up. Love pulls them to another city. School. The itch to build their own thing. The boss barely makes the list.

Here’s what the line gets right by accident. You don’t always pick your manager. One day they’re just there, someone you’d never have chosen. Works both ways. They might not have hired you either. Two people who never chose each other, one shared goal. Conflict isn’t a risk at that point. It’s the starting condition.

I’ve fought those battles from both chairs. Team member and leader. The good disagreements were worth it. They moved the work, sharpened the team, made sense later. The bad ones just hardened. Fronts locked, everybody spiraling. And every person in the room was sure the poison came from someone else.

Without the ability and the will to take other points of view, you drift toward deadlock and dead ends. You take the other side seriously. Not agree with it. Understand it.

Do I accept that my read of the situation can be as biased as theirs, especially when it feels certain?

Do I treat a different view as an asset or a threat?

Am I defending the last word, or actually digging for what’s underneath?

The need to be right stings, and it stings the person holding it most of all. Eye level is the fix. It builds a bridge and shortens the fall. Where something divides you, something also connects you. Maybe just a little. Enough to start.

Now, the genuinely toxic relationships. Those are a different category, and I won’t pretend otherwise. They damage people, and my counsel is to leave them. Deliberately, never impulsively. I’ve watched relationships I’d written off recover completely. Circumstances shift. You won’t move every person or every situation, but a steady posture and consistent action move more than most leaders expect. And over time the internal read changes from the guarded “seriously, boss?” to the earned “that was strong, boss.”

Warm regards, Ralph

“People don’t leave companies, they leave their managers.” Everybody quotes it.
