Sometimes a company’s culture isn’t in its mission statement. It lives somewhere quieter. Like a vacuum bag.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the middle of a department store, the kind of controlled chaos that smells like perfume and commerce, a woman looked down at her hand and felt her stomach drop. The diamond in her wedding ring was gone. Just an empty setting, bent and broken, where something irreplaceable used to be.<\/p>\n

She knelt down and started looking. An employee noticed, asked what had happened, and grasped the situation quickly. Both the practical and the emotional dimensions of it. He didn’t hand her off to a manager or file a lost-and-found report. He got down there with her and they searched together, two people on their hands and knees in a department store, looking for something the size of a raindrop in a sea of floor.<\/p>\n

They didn’t find it. Of course they didn’t.<\/p>\n

And here’s the moment. He could have stood up, dusted himself off, and said “We’ll let you know if anything turns up.” He had inventory to manage. Legitimate work waiting. She would have accepted it. But he wasn’t finished. He found the two cleaning crew members who had just come through that area and asked them to open their vacuum bags. They did. And there it was, sitting in the dust and debris, one tiny perfect diamond.<\/p>\n

This happened at Nordstrom. Their employee handbook has exactly one rule: use good judgment.<\/p>\n

Was this good judgment? By most operational definitions, this went beyond. But judgment isn’t only about efficiency. It’s about reading a situation correctly and responding to what it actually requires. That employee understood what was at stake for that customer, and he acted accordingly. Maybe the real rule behind the rule is simply this: understand the person in front of you. Everything else follows.<\/p>\n
