The tone was somewhat dark yet it raised an interesting question.

After his early writing courses, Knausgaard believed he lacked the makings of a writer. A close friend of his seemed far better suited to the role. He studied literature, composed refined essays and elegant poetry, played chess, and listened to jazz rather than the so called ordinary pop music Knausgaard preferred.

During a trip to Prague, the two visited a church. His friend sat quietly on a pew, bowed his head, and remained motionless for some time. Observing him, Knausgaard wondered whether his companion was perceiving something inaccessible to him. Perhaps he was experiencing poetic inspiration. The scene resembled a moment of deep contemplation.

When asked about it later, the friend replied quite simply that he had been tired and had fallen asleep.

I admire people for their talents and gifts and often look up to them. Watching athletes perform in their disciplines, listening to virtuoso musicians, or admiring the works of great painters feels like pure inspiration.

Sometimes, and this happens from time to time, the pendulum swings the other way. In my own professional field encountering people with impressive abilities can trigger an uncomfortable question. Am I good enough? Self-doubts rise. I feel small. Then smaller. Then smaller still. It pulls me down into a kind of darkness.

Shadow and light sit close together, just like viewpoints and perspectives. But perspective is rarely objective. It is constructed. Does it really make sense to doubt oneself only because the supposedly great poet on the church bench happened to fall asleep? Meaning is something we assign. No one else. We shrink ourselves while imagining others as larger than life.

So how do we gain new perspectives?

For me the answer is curiosity, questions, and listening. No curiosity means no discovery. If you ask questions, you encounter opinions, experiences and viewpoints. Listening without squeezing the answers into your own framework expands your understanding. Often wider than expected.

That is where perspective truly grows.

Warmly
Ralph Hubacher

A BBC portrait of the Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgaard recently caught my attention.
